Our club name is Limerick Lions Basketball Club.
The name of our Men’s National League Team is Limerick Sport Eagles.

1970-2002

The club foundations date back to the 1970’s when basketball was first introduced to Limerick City.
The majority of the existing coaching staff have direct links with the period in the club from 1999 to 2004 when the Men’s team was called Team Burgerking Limerick! This team won the National Cup title in 2002.

2002-2013

In 2004 the club was renamed to Limerick Lions and it has grown from strength to strength every year since.
In 2009, Limerick Lions Basketball Club parted ways with its National League team. As a result, the University of Limerick absorbed the team and it was rebranded as UL Eagles.
In February 2012, UL Eagles won the National Cup title after defeating UCC Demons in the final. Eagles went on to win a historic National League title in March 2012 and backed that up in 2013 by defending their title.

2013-2018

Sustaining this level of success proved very difficult and after finishing last in the Super League table in 2016/17 season, UL Eagles were demoted to the Basketball Ireland Men’s Division One National League for the 2017/18 season.
In September 2017 the very difficult decision to withdraw from the National League entirely was made by a newly formed committee. This gave the club and team a chance to reevaluate their goals and development strategy and were able to re-apply for entry back into the National League for the next season.

2018-2022

The team returned as UL Sport Eagles into the National League Division One in the 2018/19 season. They continued in Division One as UL Sport Eagles in the 2019/20 season.
In 2020, the team’s name was rebranded to Limerick Sport Eagles. The 2020/21 season did not go ahead due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The team got back to business in the 2021/22 season and are going from strength to strength at present under the guidance of Head Coach, Matt Hall and Assistant Coach, Tommy Walsh and are backed up by a great team of volunteers doing all the necessary background work on a weekly basis.
